Helen and her husband Bill have walked over 12,000 miles in Africa studying the centuries old indigenous cultures. They lived with the Masaai, Berbers, Dakoda and Bushmen. In their time with the various tribes they experienced up-close encounters with African wildlife. Helen’s “Walking Africa” program is a National Geographic display of all “big five” animals including elephants, lions, cheetah and leopards. In addition you will see numerous species of African birds and many unique African landscapes from the vast Sahara sand dunes to the endless Serengeti grasslands.

Helen Thayer is a New Zealand-born explorer. At 50, she became the first woman to travel solo to the magnetic North Pole, pulling her own sled without resupply. She travelled on foot, with no outside help.  She continues to develop educational programs with her husband Bill, a retired helicopter pilot.

Thayer is the author of Polar Dream: The First Solo Expedition by a Woman and Her Dog to the Magnetic North Pole, Three Among the Wolves: A year of Friendship with Wolves in the Wild, & Trekking the Gobi: Desert of Dreams & Despair.

She has received the Northwest Explorer’s Club’s Vancouver Award, & the Robert Henning Award from the Alaskan Geographic Alliance for exploration & education.

Happy New Year! We are excited to gather on Wednesday January 9th for our first luncheon of 2013, with Kim Arellano, speaking on the Psychology of a Sale.

Understanding behavior and motivation of yourself, organization and clients impact your success. Whether you are selling a product or idea, or building relationships, how others perceive you and the world around them, drives their understanding of what you have to say. We will discuss the role of fear and stress in buying decisions, as well as how strategic partnerships are sometimes formed, or destroyed, without saying a word.

Join us to discover:
- Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and when someone (or yourself) is operating out of survival in what seems to be a benign situation. Learn to help the person out of a preservation cycle, where they can become free to think creatively and innovatively about the situation.

- The impact of personality preferences, as well as one’s own personality impact on negotiation, change and stress (Hint: some run, some fight and some freeze). We all give off subtle clues and cues that let others know how we are perceiving information. The person who can pick-up and react to these cues will have a unique opportunity to address the needs quickly. We will learn what to look for and how one could react.

- The art of dialectic conversation, a skill that works to remove debate and conflict from the conversation, while building trust and respect.

For 20 years, Kim Arellano held leadership positions in for-profit and non-profit worlds, including a role as regional sales director for a Fortune 500 global telecommunications company. In 2008, she left the industry to start a thriving consulting business devoted to helping organizations maximize innovation and creativity through understanding motivation and behavior. Kim believes that listening and asking questions of not only the client, but the situation, allows the best opportunity to organize solutions to fit her client’s exact needs.  Kim Arellano lives where she grew up in the Snoqualmie Valley for over 33 years. She has a Masters Degree in Psychology, and is currently a PhD. Student in Organizational Systems Thinking.
